Hurricane City Festival of Trees - December 6, 2013

The girls were asked to emcee the Hurricane City Festival of Trees entertainment.  They mostly were the stage crew and they had fun and enjoyed the Christmas programs.

Fundraising

Most things that anyone does requires some sort of fundraising.  Miss Toquerville is not immune from this.  As the years have went by and life has become harder and harder, the residents of Toquerville and everywhere have shallower pockets.  We do not get as many donations and monetary gifts as the program has in the past.  Toquerville is unique in the fact that they offer a $500 scholarship to Miss Toquerville.  They hold these funds for each princess until she attends any college of her choice.  This is a great opportunity for all the girls in this area.  The Miss Toquerville program is also different in that the girls are required to provide community service BEFORE the pageant.  I really like these differences.  It really makes Toquerville's program unique.  But.... this also throws a kink in the fundraising.  This makes it so every year, for the entire year, there is only $500 to use for the float, fair, matching outfits for the fair, T-shirts, parade candy, and the pageant and pageant preparations.  $500 does not go very far at all especially when you are competing for prize money against other cities who have three times the budget JUST for the fair and also the County Pageant program which I can only imagine their budget.  Soooo... we sold calendars.  This was started a couple of years back and they had really good success.  They had hundreds of photo submitted.  The photos are submitted by people in the community sharing their "Beauty of Toquerville".  This year we had 12 submissions, yes 12!!!!  We also are required to disqualify any photos of personal property.  Needless to say there wasn't a lot to choose from.  We made it work and ordered 300 calendars.  Thinking the city office would sell as many that they had in the past, we split the order between the girls and the city.  The girls were able to sell 150 calendars.  The city sold 20.  Yes, 20!!!!!  That barely broke even.  The support just wasn't there for the calendar.  We will have to raise funds a different way.  This has probably been the most frustrating aspect of this program.  There have been past princess parents that felt they were to be reimbursed even if they had gone over the set budget.  This has dwindled our funds and that of future programs almost to the point that there no longer is this amazing program.  I can go on an on about how important this year is in the life of the girls that are a member of the royalty.  I KNOW it can change lives.  So we go on trying to put on a great program for the girls who might want to participate and have a wonderful year.  Please join us on Saturday, May 17th @7 pm for the Miss Toquerville Pageant!

Christmas lighting ceremony- November 30, 2013

We have a very nice little program to begin the Christmas season here in Toquerville.  The girls serve treats and hot chocolate and the town's people sing beautiful music and tell wonderful Christmas stories.

Toquerville Turkey Trot - Thanksgiving Day 2013

Toquerville's Turkey trot is held on Thanksgiving morning.  It is put together by some wonderful people including Jared Elison ( CLASSIC SPORTS ) and Layne Gardner.  The girls were asked to help register participants, take time and numbers, and help hand out the T-shirts and pies.

Mayor's walk - November 30, 2013

The towns of Washington County hosted "Mayor's Walks" as part of a get-healthy campaign.  Toquerville's was one of the very last and landed on a very chilly and drizzly day.  Jessica was able to be in attendance and there were a lot of go-getters that braved the coldness.

The Mayor's walk was a short 2 mile walk around some of Toquerville's historic homes and sites.

Where have we been?

I always start out with good intentions.  It won't be too hard to keep up on a blog just about Jessica and her year of reign, right?  WRONG...... but we are back as we get into the preparing and planning for the 2014 Miss Toquerville Pageant to be held May 17, 2014.

Veteran's Day Parade Monday, November 11, 2013

It was a chilly morning in November.  Cory was able to get a Humvee for the parade.  He just did not want to drag that float to St. George again.  Mayor LeFevre rode with the girls and I believe he had quite a bit of fun!  The girls had a little bit of fun too as they had a GREAT excuse to miss school.
